The Best Time to Visit Napa Valley

A Season-by-Season Guide

Ask ten Napa visitors which season they loved most, and you’ll get ten different answers. That’s not a cop-out - it’s the truth about a wine region that genuinely delivers something special in every month of the year. But if you’re trying to plan a trip and want our honest recommendation: spring is worth serious consideration.

This guide walks you through what each season actually looks and feels like in Napa Valley, and why so many guests at Markham Vineyards tell us their spring visit ended up being their favorite.

Spring (March – May): The Sweet Spot

Napa Valley in spring is the season that matches most people’s mental picture of the valley – except it’s better. After winter rains, the vineyards flush a brilliant green, wild mustard blooms between the vine rows, and the whole valley feels like it’s waking up. It’s genuinely beautiful.

Weather: Warm enough to linger on a patio, cool enough that you’re not checking the thermometer every ten minutes. Spring wine tasting in Napa Valley is a pleasure outdoors – think shaded garden seating, a glass of Merlot, no rush.

Crowds: Noticeably lighter than summer and harvest. Reservations are easier to secure, tasting room staff have more time for conversation, and the whole experience feels unhurried.

St. Helena in spring: The town comes alive. St. Helena spring activities include wine tasting walks through downtown, cycling the Napa Valley Vine Trail, and farm-to-table restaurants drawing on what’s just come into season. St. Helena wine tasting in spring has a relaxed, welcoming energy that’s hard to replicate in the busier months.

Our take: If you’re asking “Is spring a good time to visit Napa Valley?” – yes, with confidence. It offers the best balance of beauty, weather, and access.

Summer (June – August): Energy and Long Days

Summer is Napa Valley at its most social. Long, warm days are perfect for outdoor tasting in Napa Valley, and the season brings festivals, live music, and a lively tasting room scene. If you thrive in a buzzy, packed-calendar atmosphere, summer delivers.

The trade-off: this is peak season. Book tasting reservations well in advance, expect more competition for patio tables, and budget accordingly. Heat can also be a factor in July and August – look for a Napa tasting room with outdoor seating that’s shaded or catches a breeze.

Harvest (September – October): Napa at Its Most Dramatic

Harvest season is bucket-list Napa. The grapes come in, wineries shift into high gear, and the valley takes on a golden, cinematic quality. The air smells faintly of fermentation. It’s exciting, and the rest of the world has figured this out too.

Accommodations and tastings book up fast. If harvest is on your list, plan at least three to four months ahead. The experience is worth the effort – but don’t leave it to chance.

Winter (November – February): Quiet, Intimate, Underrated

Winter is Napa Valley’s best-kept secret. Fewer visitors means more time with winery teams, easier reservations, and a slower, more thoughtful pace. Tasting rooms lean into fireside settings and deeper conversations about the wines. If you find packed tasting rooms stressful, winter offers real relief.

The vines are dormant and the landscape is stark rather than lush, but there’s a quiet beauty to it. And the wines are just as good.

Spring at Markham Vineyards

We’ve been welcoming guests to our Historic Stone Cellar – built in 1879 – for a long time, and spring remains one of our favorite seasons to share with visitors. The outdoor spaces are at their best, the wine list is as strong as ever, and the pace allows for the kind of tasting experience that’s memorable.

A spring visit to Markham typically includes relaxed tastings centered on our Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, food pairings that evolve with the season, and plenty of time to take in the vineyard views. We’re one of the best wineries to visit in spring in Napa Valley and St. Helena for that reason: the experience is designed to feel unhurried.

One thing worth knowing: every third Thursday of the month, we host Third Thursdays at Markham – an evening of great wine, local food, and live music in a relaxed, community atmosphere. It’s a wonderful way to experience the winery beyond a standard tasting, and spring evenings here are particularly special. If your trip lines up with a Third Thursday, we’d strongly suggest building your schedule around it.

So, When Should You Go?

The honest answer: it depends on what you’re after.

  • Spring: Beautiful scenery, comfortable weather, lighter crowds, easier reservations. Our top pick for first-time visitors and anyone who wants a more personal experience.
  • Summer: Lively, social, packed with events. Book ahead and embrace the energy.
  • Harvest: Iconic and exciting. The most dramatic time to visit, but plan months in advance.
  • Winter: Quiet, intimate, and underrated. Perfect if you want a slower pace and genuine connection with the wine.

If you’re building a Napa Valley Spring Travel Guide, St. Helena is worth anchoring your itinerary around – and Markham Vineyards is a natural starting point. Come for the wine, stay for the view, and let us know if you’ll be here on a Third Thursday.
